Root Canal Treatment: What No One Tells You!
All of us have at some point had a root canal done or know of someone who’s had a root canal done. But what is it really?
Root canal treatment or RCT is the therapeutic treatment done for your teeth when the infection is beyond the scope of a normal filling.
Root canal is the deep cleaning of your tooth, all the way upto the roots and then filling your tooth.
Why isn’t a regular filling enough?
Broadly your tooth has 3 layers:
1. Enamel
2. Dentin
3. Pulp
Enamel and dentin are the hard coverings but the pulp consists of the blood supply and nerves. Regular fillings are done when the infection is limited to the dentin. Infection involving the pulp cannot be fought with a regular filling.
The alternative option is to let your tooth die, extract it and then replace it with something else. The choice is yours!
A root canal may also be required in case you break your teeth. If the fracture is involving your pulp then the only way to save it is via RCT.
